Seldom Records

Seldom Records

Seldom Records was created because three people who love music got fed up with being force-fed bland, pre-packaged pop groups by the record industry, and decided to do something about it. This was a fair few years ago and we have stuck to our somewhat apt name.

The band Uniform Motion have posted a breakdown of how much money they get if you purchase their music through any of the various legal mechanisms available. It’s a fascinating read.

Life-Altering Music Format of the Day: For his latest release, The Occurrence, musician Jeff Mills fused a CD and 5” vinyl record to produce a glorious hybrid, capable of being played as either/or.

We’ll have to look into using this for the next Seldom release!

  • [P]eople only made money out of records for a very, very small time. When The Rolling Stones started out, we didn’t make any money out of records because record companies wouldn’t pay you! They didn’t pay anyone!

Then, there was a small period from 1970 to 1997, where people did get paid, and they got paid very handsomely and everyone made money. But now that period has gone.

So if you look at the history of recorded music from 1900 to now, there was a 25 year period where artists did very well, but the rest of the time they didn’t.

—Sir Mick Jagger agrees with Brian Eno.

  • I think records were just a little bubble through time and those who made a living from them for a while were lucky. There is no reason why anyone should have made so much money from selling records except that everything was right for this period of time…It was a bit like if you had a source of whale blubber in the 1840s and it could be used as fuel. Before gas came along, if you traded in whale blubber, you were the richest man on Earth. Then gas came along and you’d be stuck with your whale blubber.
